Taraba State, Nigeria: Gunmen attack Binnari community

At least 58 people have been killed following an attack by unidentified gunmen on the Binnari community in the Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, Nigeria. The assault occurred on Friday, October 23, during the community’s weekly market day, shortly after Friday congregational prayers.

According to Taraba State police spokesperson Victor Mshelizah, the death toll rose to 58 after 15 additional bodies were recovered from surrounding bushes and a river on Sunday. Many victims reportedly drowned while attempting to flee the attackers via a nearby river, and an overloaded canoe carrying evacuees also capsized during the chaos.

Witnesses and community leaders reported that approximately 50 motorcycles carrying attackers swarmed the village. The gunmen reportedly opened fire indiscriminately for approximately four hours, looted shops of cash and provisions, and set houses and business premises ablaze. While Amnesty International reported a death toll of 52, local residents and police recovery efforts have pushed the confirmed number higher.

The Taraba State government has begun distributing relief materials to displaced families and survivors. No group has claimed responsibility for the violence, which occurs amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria involving banditry, communal clashes, and ethno-religious tensions.
