Nigeria vows zero tolerance for health sector corruption
The Nigerian Federal Government has announced a zero-tolerance policy regarding corruption within the health sector. Prof. Muhammad Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, stated that the diversion of healthcare resources poses a direct threat to lives and national service improvements.
To combat this, a Joint Task Team has been established through a Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The team is tasked with identifying institutional vulnerabilities, strengthening preventive controls, and improving oversight to ensure transparent management and accountability.
Existing measures include the deployment of 774 officers—one per Local Government Area—to independently verify funds under the BHCPF 2.0 program. Additionally, the ministry is utilizing verified National Identification Numbers to authenticate beneficiaries and is digitalizing processes to allow for transparent tracking of resources from allocation to final use.
