Nigeria health sector reform and protection measures
Overview
The Nigerian Federal Government has initiated several measures to address systemic issues within the national health sector.
Following a report from a Ministerial Committee regarding the harassment of medical staff, the government ordered nationwide protections for health workers. This directive aims to investigate and prosecute those who assault or intimidate staff, following incidents involving security personnel and the public at federal tertiary health institutions. The committee identified factors such as inadequate staffing, weak infrastructure, and abuse of authority as contributors to workplace instability.
In a separate effort to improve sector integrity, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare partnered with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to establish a Joint Task Team. This initiative targets corruption and the diversion of healthcare resources through strengthened oversight, the deployment of officers to verify funds at the local government level, and the digitalization of resource tracking.
