Nigerian Air Force kills nine ISWAP fighters in Borno airstrike
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) conducted a precision airstrike in the Sambisa Forest area of Borno State on Saturday, August 8, 2026. The operation, which utilized a Remotely Piloted Aircraft for intelligence and surveillance, resulted in the deaths of nine Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters. Among the deceased was Abu Khalid Al Muhajir, a prominent commander responsible for providing security escorts for senior ISWAP members and navigating tactical routes between terrorist enclaves.
In separate operations in Borno, Nigerian troops recovered improvised explosive device (IED) materials and a large cache of medical supplies intended for ISWAP in the Kareto area. Additionally, two suspected collaborators were arrested at a checkpoint along the Mandaragirau-Sabon Gari Road.
Internal instability within ISWAP has also been reported. Intelligence suggests a leadership crisis has deepened following the alleged execution of four Shura Council members at the Kwatan Dila enclave. A senior commander, identified as Ba Shuwa, reportedly supervised these executions amid an ongoing power struggle within the organization.
