Nigerian Army activates four new divisions, appoints commanders
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the creation of four additional Nigerian Army divisions, raising the total number of divisions to twelve. Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu then appointed General Officers Commanding for each new formation.
The new divisions are assigned specific areas of responsibility: 1 Division Kaduna (Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa), 2 Division Ibadan (Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo), 3 Division Jos (Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe), 5 Division Makurdi (Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi), 6 Division Port Harcourt (Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River), 7 Division Maiduguri (Borno, Yobe), 8 Division Sokoto (Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara), 9 Division Ilorin (Kwara, Niger) and 10 Division Jalingo (border areas of Taraba and Adamawa). Additional existing divisions—81 Lagos, 82 Enugu and the future 83 Benin City—remain in place. The divisions will commence operations after achieving Initial Operational Capability and will progress toward Full Operational Capability, a phased approach intended to ensure seamless operationalisation and rapid force projection across the country.
