Nigerian Army Chief emphasizes domestic defense and personnel welfare
Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of Nigeria, has called for increased private sector investment in indigenous defense manufacturing and youth development. During a visit to Equipment and Protective Applications International Limited (EPAIL) in Ogun State, Shaibu emphasized that developing local technological capabilities is essential to reducing reliance on foreign imports and strengthening national security.
In separate initiatives focused on personnel welfare, Shaibu addressed the importance of mental health and discipline within the ranks. At a seminar in Jaji, Kaduna State, he warned personnel against drug abuse and encouraged soldiers to seek professional help for psychological challenges, noting that mental resilience is as critical as physical strength in complex security environments.
Additionally, Dr. Safiya Shaibu, President of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association, highlighted the role of family support in maintaining soldier morale. Speaking at a seminar for military families, she noted that strong domestic support systems are indispensable for sustaining operational effectiveness during prolonged deployments.
