Nigerian Army security leadership and operations
Overview
Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Nigerian Army Chief of Army Staff, has called for senior officers to adopt strategic leadership and innovative thinking to address a complex security landscape. He noted that traditional methods may be insufficient against modern, intertwined threats such as terrorism, insurgency, banditry, cyber threats, and information warfare.
Following these calls for strategic coordination, the Centre for Public Integrity (CPI) commended Shaibu for advancements in military operations and civil-military relations. The CPI reported that intensified operations in the North-East and North-West have dismantled criminal enclaves and neutralized key commanders. Additionally, the group noted an improvement in the relationship between the military and civilians, citing stricter adherence to human rights and increased community engagement.
Building on these strategic objectives, Shaibu announced an expansion of the Nigerian Army to increase its operational footprint and responsiveness to security threats. Speaking at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, Plateau State, he stated that establishing new formations and units is intended to strengthen military presence in vulnerable areas and protect critical national infrastructure.
Shaibu further emphasized that national security is directly linked to sustainable development. He noted that the expanded force structure aims to create a secure environment necessary for economic growth, specifically targeting the ‘Orange Economy’—encompassing arts, culture, music, film, and digital content. By denying criminal elements freedom of action, the expansion is expected to support entrepreneurship and mitigate the disruption of investment and productivity caused by insecurity.
