Nigerian Army Chief Shaibu praised for counter-terrorism gains

The Centre for Public Integrity (CPI), a pro-democracy civil rights movement, has commended Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for significant advancements in military operations and civil-military relations.

According to a statement signed by CPI convener Dr. John Samuel Nang, the Nigerian Army has demonstrated increased professionalism and strategic coordination in combating terrorism, banditry, and insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP. The group noted that intensified operations in the North-East and North-West have led to the dismantling of criminal enclaves, the neutralization of key commanders, and the restoration of confidence among displaced communities.

Furthermore, the CPI highlighted a positive shift in how the military engages with the public. The group credited Lt. Gen. Shaibu with enforcing stricter adherence to human rights and rules of engagement. Through community outreach, medical initiatives, and dialogue, the relationship between soldiers and civilians has transitioned from one of mutual suspicion to one of partnership. The CPI also praised the improved synergy and intelligence sharing between the Army and other security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.
