Nigerian Army Expands Formations and Shifts to Tech‑Driven Operations

At the opening of the First Bi‑Annual Chief of Army Staff Conference 2026 in Abuja, Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu announced a nationwide expansion of army formations. The plan includes new recruitment drives, infrastructure development, enhanced welfare packages, and improved healthcare for personnel, alongside the establishment of additional operational units to boost effectiveness against insurgency, banditry, terrorism and other threats.

Shaibu also highlighted a strategic shift toward more mobile, intelligence‑coordinated and technology‑enabled warfare. He cited recent aviation‑supported troop insertions in the North‑East’s “Timbuktu Triangle” as a demonstration of this new capability. The conference honored families of fallen and wounded soldiers with insurance cheques and reiterated the “soldier‑first” leadership philosophy, stressing morale, welfare and public trust as essential to operational success.
