Nigerian Army stresses shared security role at 163rd Army Day celebrations

During the 163rd Nigerian Army Day, Defence Minister of State Bello Matawalle called on citizens to combine prayer with active civic participation, saying that national security cannot rely on the armed forces alone. He highlighted the need for a whole‑of‑society approach, urging communities to cooperate with security agencies to counter criminal activity.

Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede reaffirmed the army’s commitment to protecting the nation’s sovereignty, citing ongoing operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other threats. He noted recent successes in neutralising criminal elements and rescuing hostages, and announced a recruitment surge ordered by President Bola Tinubu to expand the army’s capacity. The celebration’s theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” underscores the emphasis on professionalism, soldier welfare and public cooperation.
