Nigerian Communications Commission awards N6m to assistive tech startups
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has awarded N6 million in grants to three startups for developing digital assistive technologies aimed at improving accessibility for persons with disabilities. During the fourth edition of the NCC Hackathon Live Show in Abuja, Sora secured the grand prize of 3 million Naira, followed by Clear Signal with 2 million Naira and IKOR with 1 million Naira.
Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, emphasized the importance of digital inclusion, noting that approximately 25 million Nigerians live with at least one form of disability. Maida highlighted that achieving a $1 trillion economy requires ensuring no citizens are digitally excluded from education, healthcare, or financial services.
Furthermore, the NCC is advocating for increased investment in homegrown technology to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on foreign software. Maida urged venture capitalists and telecommunications operators to support these local innovators to strengthen the country’s digital sovereignty and ensure technological self-reliance.
