Nigerian Communications Commission hosts hackathon for digital inclusion

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched the fourth edition of its NCC Hackathon in Abuja, themed ‘Technology Without Barriers.’ The initiative aims to foster digital inclusion by challenging young innovators to create affordable and scalable technological solutions for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and other underserved communities.

Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, Rimini Makama, emphasized that the competition seeks practical tools rather than just sophisticated technology. The focus areas include artificial intelligence, assistive technologies, voice-enabled communication, sign language recognition, and accessible digital services. The goal is to address existing barriers in accessing healthcare, education, financial services, and government platforms.

Twenty contestants participated in the event, with five finalists advancing to the grand finale. The commission stated that the program reflects its commitment to ensuring Nigeria’s digital transformation is inclusive and enables all citizens to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.
