Nigerian Communications Commission launches device verification framework

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched an enhanced device verification framework to identify and block fake, cloned, and non-compliant SIM-enabled devices from accessing telecommunications networks.

Edoyemi Ogoh, the NCC Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity, announced the initiative in Abuja. The framework aims to strengthen regulatory oversight, protect consumers from substandard products, and improve overall network integrity and performance. The move is supported by Section 132(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, which mandates that communications equipment must receive Type Approval before being sold or used in the country.

To assist the public, the NCC has introduced a toll-free verification line, 315, allowing consumers to check the approval status of mobile phones, tablets, and modems before purchasing. The Commission is working in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service, original equipment manufacturers, and various industry stakeholders to monitor the movement of devices and prevent the entry of substandard products into the market.
