Nigerian Correctional Service removes prison officials after death‑row inmate livestreams on TikTok
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) removed the Officer‑in‑Charge of the Ibara Medium Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, along with two other principal officers after a death‑row inmate used a prohibited mobile phone to broadcast a live video on TikTok from inside the facility. The phone was recovered and secured as evidence, and the inmate was transferred to a higher‑security prison pending the outcome of the investigation.
Controller‑General of Corrections Sylvester Nwakuche described the breach as a serious violation of custodial security and ordered the administrative actions to ensure an impartial probe. Investigators are examining whether any staff, other inmates or external collaborators facilitated the breach, and any person found to have aided it will face disciplinary sanctions. The NCoS said the incident exposed security gaps and that reforms are being accelerated across its custodial centres.
