Nigeria prison TikTok livestream scandal
Overview
In early August 2026, Nigeria’s interior ministry disclosed that a federal audit had led to the release of more than 4,000 inmates, reducing prison occupancy by about five percent. The audit was prompted by the discovery that a death‑row inmate had livestreamed on TikTok from the Ibara Medium Custodial Centre. In response, the Nigerian Correctional Service removed the officer‑in‑charge of the centre and two senior officials, and the prison chief was sacked. The inmate was transferred to a higher‑security facility while the breach was investigated.
Two days later, the Correctional Service reiterated the disciplinary actions, confirming the removal of the same officials and emphasizing an accelerated reform programme to address security gaps. Investigators were tasked with determining whether staff, other inmates, or external parties had facilitated the phone breach, and any accomplices would face sanctions.
