Nigerian Medical Association urges Oyo State Governor to resolve LAUTECH doctors' welfare crisis

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called on Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to urgently resolve a welfare crisis affecting resident doctors at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso. NMA National President Dr. Afekhide Ernest Omoti expressed deep concern over unimplemented agreements between the state government and the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD).

Key outstanding demands include the payment of 2025 state minimum wage arrears, the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), the implementation of a corrected professional allowances table, and the enforcement of call/work-hour regulatory policies. Additionally, doctors are seeking the payment of upgrade and promotion arrears.

The NMA warned that failure to address these issues could lead to service disruptions. The association emphasized that excessive workloads, poor remuneration, and burnout directly threaten patient safety and healthcare outcomes in the state. While noting that resident doctors have shown patience for nearly three months, the NMA stressed that formal advocacy must be met with government action to restore morale and stabilize healthcare delivery.
