Nigerian Military Calls for End to Social Media Misinformation
The Nigerian Army, represented by Acting Director of Public Relations Col. Appolonia Anele, appealed to the public to cease circulating false narratives on social media, warning that such misinformation erodes troop morale and disrespects soldiers who have died in operations such as the recent rescue mission in Oyo State.
The Nigerian Air Force’s Director of Public Relations Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame made a similar plea, urging Nigerians to trust official Air Force statements and cautioning that misinformation can unintentionally aid terrorist groups by spreading fear and confusion. He recounted a personal anecdote about his father doubting an official statement, reinforcing his resolve to ensure all communications are verifiable. Both officers addressed the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria, emphasizing the need for accurate reporting, regular media briefings, and stronger cooperation between the armed forces and journalists.
