Nigerian Navy launches crackdown on piracy and oil theft

The Nigerian Navy has launched a renewed offensive to combat maritime piracy, sea robbery, and crude oil theft. This initiative aims to secure national waterways and protect critical energy infrastructure, addressing significant revenue leakages and environmental hazards in the Niger Delta region.

To enhance operational readiness, the Eastern Naval Command recently conducted ‘Exercise Littoral Fury’ in Cross River State. This three-day tactical live-firing exercise was designed to improve the ability of naval personnel to respond to maritime security threats and strengthen coordination between security agencies. Rear Admiral Chiedozie Okehie noted that the littoral environment requires specialized skills and effective communication to manage unique operational challenges.

The Navy’s strategy involves transitioning from a reactive to a proactive posture by utilizing advanced surveillance technology and intensified patrols. These efforts are intended to intercept criminal syndicates involved in illegal bunkering and pipeline vandalism, which have historically hindered Nigeria’s ability to meet OPEC production quotas and increased costs for international oil companies.
