Nigerian Navy intensifies Operation Delta Sentinel

Entities: Nigerian Navy · Filia · Nigeria · Hong Kong company · Operation Delta Sentinel

Overview

Operation Delta Sentinel continues to target illegal refining and oil theft. Since late July 2026 the navy has seized additional illicit cargo. On 29 July, after a week‑long surveillance, the navy intercepted the Hong Kong‑owned tanker Filia, flagged to São Tomé and Príncipe, anchored near an offshore export terminal. The ship was found with about 650 tonnes of crude oil (valued at roughly $490,000) and 33 tonnes of fuel oil. Crew members dumped part of the oil into the sea, creating marine pollution, and all 12 crew were detained.

This seizure reinforces earlier actions, including the 23 July boarding of the same vessel that uncovered 650 tonnes of undocumented crude and 32.82 tonnes of fuel oil, and the 27 July interception of two wooden boats in Okrika, which yielded 15,500 L of petroleum products. Between April and June the navy reported recovering over 4.7 million L of product, shutting down 58 illegal refineries, destroying 239 pits and 13 ovens, and arresting more than 90 suspects. The campaign aligns with Nigeria’s rising crude output of about 1.89 million barrels per day, exceeding its OPEC quota, and aims to safeguard revenue and reduce environmental damage.
