Nigerian Navy pledges enhanced security to boost crude oil output
The Nigerian Navy has pledged to enhance security support for oil producers to protect critical petroleum infrastructure and facilitate increased crude oil output. Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, the Chief of Naval Staff, made this commitment during a meeting in Abuja with a delegation from the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Oil Producers Trade Section.
The discussions, led by committee chairman Johnson Ogbum, focused on mitigating crude oil theft, third-party interference, and threats to offshore and near-shore assets, including export terminals and remote production facilities. The delegation requested increased naval patrols in vulnerable maritime zones and improved security for the movement of petroleum products.
Vice Admiral Abbas emphasized that intelligence sharing between the Navy and oil companies is vital for anticipating threats. He also noted that the Navy would utilize technology to improve maritime surveillance and patrol capabilities. He assured the delegation that formal requests for additional security support would be evaluated based on identified needs.
