Nigerian opposition parties form coalition for 2027 elections
Presidential candidates from the Accord Party, African Action Congress (AAC), and Social Democratic Party (SDP) have agreed to form a coalition to challenge the current administration in Nigeria’s 2027 elections. Following a meeting in Port Harcourt, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, Omoyele Sowore, and Adewole Adebayo committed to developing a joint democratic alternative focused on economic justice, security, and institutional reform.
The alliance aims to mobilize diverse groups, including labor unions, youth, and civil society, to prevent what they described as a “coronation disguised as an election.” While the specific structure and the eventual presidential candidate of the coalition are yet to be determined, the leaders emphasized that national interest must take precedence over individual ambitions.
Separately, other major opposition parties are also preparing for the 2027 cycle. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated it is fully prepared with structures in place across all 36 states, while the Labour Party in Lagos indicated it is awaiting a court judgment before commencing full mobilization efforts.
