Nigerian opposition parties to hold unity summit in Abuja

The G100, a group of stakeholders and opposition parties, is organizing a unity summit in Abuja scheduled for August 18, 2026. The event aims to foster cooperation among Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Consultations have already been held with leaders from six political parties: the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP). These discussions involved national chairmen, presidential candidates, and running mates.

According to a statement signed by Salihu Mohammed Lukman, the consultations were conducted privately to allow for frank and constructive engagement on sensitive issues without public pressure. The group emphasized that creating a credible opposition requires “sacrifice, compromise and a willingness to place the larger interests of the country above narrow partisan or individual considerations.” The summit is intended to serve as a platform for detailed discussions on achieving greater political coordination.
