Nigerian Ports Authority launches regional safety programme and traffic‑gridlock task force

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) announced two major initiatives aimed at strengthening maritime operations and improving cargo movement. Under the Abuja MoU on Port State Control, the NPA introduced a capacity‑building programme to enhance regulatory compliance and inspection standards across West and Central Africa. The launch, led by NPA Managing Director Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, highlighted support from regional leaders and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, and emphasised the programme’s role in reinforcing safety, pollution prevention, security and seafarer welfare.

In a separate effort to ease congestion on Lagos port access roads, the NPA set up a multi‑agency task force comprising the Port Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, freight forwarders, customs agents, and transport unions. Following a stakeholder meeting on 23 June 2026, the task force will monitor truck movements, address illegal extortion points and resolve bottlenecks without establishing new checkpoints. A dedicated WhatsApp platform will enable rapid reporting and response, while the authority reviews the renewal of the Electronic Truck Call‑Up system to further streamline logistics.
