Nigerian schools fortify campuses with escape routes amid rising abductions

Nigerian schools are implementing intensive security measures, including the creation of emergency escape routes, to protect students and staff from rising abductions and terrorist attacks. Following incidents such as the May abduction of 82 schoolchildren in Borno and Oyo states, administrators are fortifying campuses by installing surveillance cameras, extending perimeter fencing, and hiring local guards.

In some regions, school principals are teaching pupils how to use newly carved escape paths during attacks. The Nigeria Union of Teachers and the Parents-Teachers Association of Nigeria are collaborating with the government to strengthen protections, particularly in rural communities. The government is also reportedly working to reorganize the Safe School Project in response to these security concerns.

These defensive shifts follow warnings from the Office of the National Security Adviser regarding potential isolated attacks by bandit and terrorist groups. Beyond schools, some transport unions have also restricted night journeys to mitigate risks.
