Security measures in Nigerian educational institutions

Security efforts in Nigerian educational institutions have intensified in response to threats such as kidnapping, cultism, and terrorist attacks.

To address these vulnerabilities, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) partnered with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the International Academy for Gender and Peace (IAGP) to conduct workshops for 600 Chief Security Officers. These sessions aim to re-tool personnel with modern skills and proactive intelligence-gathering techniques to combat campus-specific crimes like cybercrime and gender-based violence.

Simultaneously, schools are implementing physical defensive measures, including the installation of surveillance cameras, extended perimeter fencing, and the creation of emergency escape routes for students. These actions follow high-profile abductions and warnings from the Office of the National Security Adviser regarding potential attacks by bandit and terrorist groups. Collaborative efforts involving the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the Parents-Teachers Association of Nigeria are also focused on strengthening protections, particularly within rural communities.
