Nigerian Senate passes bill for Yusuf Maitama Sule University

The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill to establish a legal framework for the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education in Kano. Sponsored by Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin, the legislation aims to provide the statutory foundation necessary for the effective management, administration, and development of teacher education at the institution.

The university's origins stem from a September 2024 presidential approval by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to convert the Federal Colleges of Education in Kano and Zaria into federal universities of education. Following a request from Senator Jibrin, President Tinubu also approved the renaming of the Kano institution in May 2025 to honor the late statesman Yusuf Maitama Sule.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio presided over the plenary and expressed optimism that the bill would receive presidential assent once transmitted.
