Nigerian Senate legislative expansion of education and salud

Overview

The Nigerian Senate has passed several bills aimed at expanding the country’s higher education and healthcare infrastructure.

In mid-October 2026, the Senate passed legislation to establish a legal framework for the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education in Kano. This follows a 2024 presidential directive to convert existing federal colleges of education into universities and a 2025 decision to rename the Kano institution in honor of the late statesman Yusuf Maitama Sule.

Shortly thereafter, the Senate approved additional bills to establish a Federal University of Agriculture in Orogun, Delta State, and a Federal University of Education in Obudu, Cross River State. Further legislative measures included the creation of a Federal College of Agriculture in Owa-Olomu, Delta State, and a Federal Medical Centre in Ido, Oyo State. Senate President Godswill Akpabio noted these initiatives are intended to strengthen the education and health sectors.
