Nigerian Singer Spyro Criticizes Clergy for Profiting from Insecurity

Afrobeats artist Spyro (Oludipe Davido) said religious leaders in Nigeria are benefiting financially from the country’s growing insecurity and economic hardship. In an interview with Wazobia FM Lagos, he argued that many clergy remain silent on security issues and fail to provide voters with proper civic education, claiming, “the more the country spoils, the more money they make.” Spyro called on pastors and other faith‑based figures to speak out against crime, advise congregants on personal safety, and offer electoral guidance, urging Nigerians to hold both political and religious leaders accountable.

He highlighted the substantial influence of churches and mosques over millions of Nigerians and suggested that this power should be used to promote public safety and democratic participation rather than to profit from crises.
