Nigerian States Boost Healthcare with Digital and Maternal Investments
The Zamfara State Government launched a digital health initiative aimed at improving service delivery, disease surveillance, data management and evidence‑based decision‑making across hospitals and health facilities. Commissioner for Health Dr Nafisa Muhammad Maradun highlighted challenges such as fragmented systems, limited interoperability, low digital literacy and infrastructure gaps, and convened a stakeholder meeting to chart a roadmap for an integrated digital health ecosystem.
In Bauchi State, Governor Bala Mohammed announced intensified investment of billions of naira in health infrastructure and maternal care. The programme includes upgrading 138 primary health centres to Level II, completing two new general hospitals, rehabilitating the state specialist hospital, and equipping facilities with ultrasound machines, solar power and emergency obstetric equipment. Over 72,000 antenatal care kits and 64,000 Mama Kits have been distributed, more than 1,500 health workers recruited, and about 5,000 students enrolled in pre‑service training. The governor reiterated a commitment to allocate at least 15 % of the state budget to health, citing substantial funding to primary care, child nutrition, drug revolving funds and family‑planning commodities.
