Nigeria expands maternal and child health initiatives
Overview
Throughout mid-to-late 2026, Nigerian states and civil society organizations intensified efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality through infrastructure upgrades, community engagement, and policy reforms.
In Kaduna, the state government launched a new policy and guidelines for Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) to improve health outcomes. Supported by UNICEF and Global Affairs Canada, the initiative includes deploying Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) consumables to primary healthcare centres and establishing Adolescent and Young People (AYP) Safe Spaces for confidential health services. Deputy Governor Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe noted that these interventions aim to ensure quality healthcare is accessible regardless of age, location, or economic status, as part of the state’s SUSTAIN Agenda.
In Sokoto, authorities expanded interventions to 23 local government areas, providing free delivery kits and solar-powered lighting for maternity units. These actions follow a United Nations Population Fund assessment, funded by the European Union, which identified gaps in emergency obstetric care. The state aims to address delays in seeking care, reaching facilities, and receiving treatment.
In Niger State, the government inaugurated N100 million worth of Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) equipment. The initiative targets strategic facilities, including the Umaru Sanda Ndayako General Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre in Bida, serving nearly two million people.
Other regional efforts included Ondo’s partnership with Jhpiego Global to tackle postpartum haemorrhage, Bauchi State’s receipt of N10 billion in medical equipment, and Kano’s triple-elimination strategy to end mother-to-child transmission of HIV, hepatitis B, and syphilis.
