Nigerian Union of Pensioners demands ₦75,000 subsidy relief arrears

The Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu for the immediate release of ₦75,000 in subsidy-removal palliative arrears. The union reports that despite the Federal Government's approval of a three-month relief package following the 2023 petrol subsidy removal, no pensioners have received the funds.

The approved arrangement consisted of ₦25,000 monthly payments for three months. The NUP stated that the delay has exacerbated the economic hardship faced by senior citizens, who are struggling with the rising costs of food, medication, electricity, and transportation.

NUP General Secretary Godwin Amadin urged the President to direct the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, along with the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), to commence payments. The union noted that verified data has already been submitted to NASSCO to facilitate transparent distribution.
