Nigerian workers threaten strike over fuel prices and wages
Nigerian public servants are threatening a three-day warning strike starting October 2 if the Federal Government does not address key economic demands by September 30. The movement is supported by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council and the Federal Workers Forum.
Key demands include reducing the petrol pump price to N500 per litre. Currently, prices in many areas range between N1,450 and N2,500 per litre. To achieve this, labor groups have proposed an intervention fund to cover landing costs and requested that the government make crude oil available to the Dangote Refinery and modular refinery operators.
Additionally, workers are calling for a wage award to mitigate rising living costs and a salary review. The Federal Workers Forum has proposed a minimum salary of N300,000, with a maximum of N1.5 million for Grade Level 17 officers. Labor leaders also seek the immediate establishment of a tripartite committee to begin discussions regarding the new national minimum wage due in 2027.
