Nigeria's 2027 election faces youth warnings of collapse and major party realignments

Northern youth groups, organised under the Coalition of Arewa Youth Groups, warned on 18 June that Nigeria’s 2027 general election could be the country’s last if the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is not challenged. The coalition demanded the immediate release of former Kaduna governor Nasir El‑Rufai, who is detained by the ICPC, and urged northern voters to vote the APC out. “If things continue to happen like this in Nigeria, 2027 might be our last attempt to have an election,” the group said.

At the same time, Nigeria’s political landscape is undergoing a wave of defections and new alliances ahead of the 2027 vote. A PDP‑Allied Peoples Movement (APM) coalition, led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, was announced at a rally in Ibadan. The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has adopted former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, with former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) fields former Vice President Atiku Abubakar with Rotimi Amaechi as vice‑president. These realignments aim to build broader opposition blocs to challenge the incumbent APC, which continues to project confidence despite ongoing economic and security challenges.
