Nigeria's Airport Authority Urges Runway Overhaul and Revenue Diversification

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says more than 17 runways across the country have exceeded their 20‑25‑year design life and require comprehensive reconstruction. Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku warned that deteriorated runways cause frequent excursion incidents during the rainy season and could lead to tragic accidents. She estimated the rehabilitation programme would cost about N580 billion and include runway rebuilding, taxiway upgrades, lighting and fencing improvements. Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo recently allocated N46 billion for the reconstruction of primary and secondary runways at Mallam Aminu International Airport in Kano.

Transportation experts also urged the authority to reduce reliance on aeronautical charges. Dr. Femi Aiyegbaje of the University of Lagos recommended expanding non‑aeronautical revenue streams such as retail, commercial property, advertising, hospitality and logistics to make airports financially self‑sustaining. Logistics specialist Nuhu Adam supported the call for a diversified commercial model to fund maintenance and upgrades without burdening airlines.
