Nigeria aviation infrastructure upgrades

Entities: Festus Keyamo · Nuhu Adam · Olubunmi Kuku · Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport · Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria

Overview

In late July 2026 Nigeria’s Federal Airports Authority (FAAN) began a series of modernization steps. On 22 July the authority launched Phase One of a Sustainable Waste Management Programme at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport, installing colour‑coded recycling bins to improve waste segregation and reduce costs. The same visit saw the inauguration of an upgraded Hajj terminal at Lagos, adding modern prayer rooms, a VIP section, new screening equipment and expanded immigration and customs facilities to handle up to 10 000 pilgrims.

A week later, on 28 July, the federal government commissioned the renovated domestic terminal at Kano’s Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. The Aviation Minister announced a N46 billion investment to resurface and rebuild the airport’s second runway, a project aimed at boosting operational efficiency and regional competitiveness. Work also began on enhancing Kano’s Hajj terminal, extending the broader “Renewed Hope Agenda” to modernise aviation infrastructure across northern Nigeria.

On 30 July FAAN’s Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku warned that more than 17 runways nationwide have exceeded their 20‑25‑year design life, leading to frequent excursions during the rainy season and raising safety concerns. She outlined a proposed N580 billion rehabilitation programme covering runway reconstruction, taxiway upgrades, lighting and fencing. Experts also urged FAAN to diversify revenue, recommending non‑aeronautical streams such as retail, advertising, hospitality and logistics to fund maintenance without overburdening airlines.
