Nigeria Government Moves to Embed Journalists with Military and Curtail Terrorist Front‑Page Coverage

The Federal Government of Nigeria has urged media organisations to limit front‑page coverage of terrorist and violent criminal groups, warning that extensive publicity can amplify fear and aid the objectives of such actors. Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris made the appeal at a national security summit in Abuja, emphasizing responsible journalism while affirming press freedom.

At the same summit, Defence Minister Christopher Musa announced that the government is exploring a programme to embed journalists with military units during selected operations. The proposal aims to improve transparency, provide first‑hand accounts, counter misinformation and enhance public confidence in the security forces tackling insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other threats. Guidelines on safety, operational confidentiality and ethical reporting are to be developed before any rollout.
