Nigeria’s Democracy Day Speakers Emphasize Citizen Participation and Legislative Accountability

On June 12, 2026, Nigeria marked Democracy Day with a statement from Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly. He urged citizens and lawmakers across the country’s 36 states to deepen accountability, transparency and grassroots participation, noting that democracy thrives only when the people’s voice is heard, protected and acted upon. Guwor highlighted the milestone of the 1993 June 12 election and the 27‑year democratic dispensation, calling on state assemblies to enact people‑oriented laws, strengthen oversight and manage public resources transparently. He praised the Delta State 8th Assembly for its commitment to prosperity and governance, and he congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors and legislators, wishing continued peace and progress for Nigeria.
