Nigeria's FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Faces Renewed Scrutiny Over 2016 Audio Tape

Nyesom Wike, former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is the focus of revived online debate after a leaked audio recording from December 2016 resurfaced. The tape, alleged to capture Wike threatening officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the outcome of the Rivers State rerun elections, has been circulated by opposition commentators and civic activists who claim it shows electoral interference. Wike and his team have denied the recording’s authenticity, describing it as a fabricated smear campaign, and no judicial conviction has been recorded.

In a separate recent appearance, Wike praised President Bola Tinubu for consistently releasing funds to the FCT, saying the president has “never abandoned” the administration. Speaking at the commissioning of the Body of Benchers Building in Abuja, he highlighted budget approvals that have enabled various infrastructure projects in the capital.

The contrasting narratives illustrate the political tension surrounding Wike’s tenure, combining lingering controversy from his past as governor with his current role overseeing development in Nigeria’s capital.
