Osun State security tightens ahead of August 15 governorship election

Tensions are escalating in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election due to rising political violence and concerns over security neutrality. Recent incidents include a shooting during an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Ilesa that injured at least four people, and attacks on Accord Party offices and billboards.

In response to allegations of partisanship, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has appointed Samuel Erale as the Electoral Commissioner of Police to oversee the election, directing the previous Commissioner, Ibrahim Gotan, to step aside as a confidence-building measure. The police plan to deploy approximately 14,692 officers, placing at least four at each of the 3,673 polling units.

Adding to the volatility, the Osun State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, was arrested following the Ilesa shooting incident. The Imole Campaign Council, representing incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, has condemned the arrest as a politically motivated attempt to intimidate Accord Party leaders. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has deployed troops under 'Operation SAFE CONDUCT' to support the police, with orders to maintain strict professionalism and neutrality.
