Osun State 2026 gubernatorial election security

Entities: Inspector-General Olatunji Disu · Commissioner Samuel Erale Etaifo · Oluwole Jimi‑Bada · Nigeria Police Force · Osun State Police

Overview

Civil society group Yiaga Africa announced a deployment of 332 observers – 300 stationary and 32 roving – across Osun State’s 30 local government areas for the August 15 governorship election. Using a sample‑based observation method, the observers will verify that votes cast match the results announced by INEC. Board member Chief Ezenwa Nwagwu warned of voter inducement (cash transfers of about N10,000) and recurring political violence, urging parties, candidates, security agencies, civil society and voters to cooperate and calling on INEC to intensify voter education.

Ten days later, the Nigeria Police Inspector‑General Olatunji Disu deployed Commissioner Samuel Erale Etaifo to Osun State to oversee security for the same election. The deployment is part of a comprehensive election‑security strategy. Police defended a July 29 raid on the residence of the State Government Secretary, describing it as intelligence‑driven and reporting the recovery of cash, voter registers and the arrest of a wanted individual. Officials stressed the need for professionalism, neutrality and strict enforcement against vote‑buying, intimidation and misinformation.
