Nigeria's INEC pledges neutrality and inclusion for 2027 elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has committed to ensuring neutrality and inclusivity for the 2027 general elections in Nigeria. Addressing concerns regarding the voters’ register, INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan stated that the commission will adhere strictly to the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2026, and binding court decisions, asserting that the body has no discretion to disregard these legal requirements.
While critics have questioned public access to the preliminary voters’ register, INEC national commissioner Mohammed Haruna clarified that the register has been displayed at wards, though it has not yet been uploaded to the official website. Under the Electoral Act 2026, INEC is required to provide a seven-day period for public scrutiny of the register no later than 90 days before a general election to allow for corrections and objections.
In Nasarawa State, INEC is also focusing on disability inclusion. Resident Electoral Commissioner Mallam Mohammed Abubakar-Sadiq pledged to ensure that persons with disabilities (PWDs) have equal opportunities to participate as voters, candidates, and observers. The commission is conducting workshops to improve the accessibility of polling units and to address gaps identified during the 2023 elections.
