Nigeria's INEC Sets June 16‑25 Primary Window for Restored Constituencies

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced a special primary election window from 16 to 25 June 2026 for political parties to nominate candidates in recently restored state constituencies ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general election. The restored seats are located in Delta, Benue, Jigawa and Kogi states and were reinstated following court judgments and in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2026.

In Delta State the constituencies include Aniocha North II, Ika North East II, Sapele II, Ethiope West II, Warri South West II and Warri North II. Benue State sees Nyamatsor, Ukum Afia, Konshisha III, Makurdi III and Gboko III restored. Jigawa State adds the Aujara constituency, and Kogi State restores Adavi East, Eika, Ajaokuta North, Bassa‑Komu, Dekina Town and District, Ijumu II, Kabba‑Bunu II, Koton Karfe II, Igalaogwa and Ogugu.

INEC clarified that all other election timelines remain unchanged and that parties must formally notify the commission before conducting primaries. The body reaffirmed its commitment to a credible, transparent and inclusive electoral process.
