INEC warns of AI-driven misinformation threats to 2027 elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued warnings regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on the upcoming 2027 general elections in Nigeria. Officials, including Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan and National Commissioner Mohammed Kudu Haruna, highlighted that generative AI, deepfakes, and voice cloning can be used to create convincing but false audio, video, and images. These tools could be used to spread misinformation, manipulate voter narratives, or impersonate officials to delegitimize election results.

To combat these threats, INEC has established a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Division within its ICT Department and is deploying AI tools to detect administrative errors and discrepancies in election results. The commission is also working to strengthen its institutional memory by training staff through the newly formed Graphics, Library and Documentation (GLD) Division to ensure better archiving of electoral records.

Beyond technology, INEC is addressing logistical and security concerns. The commission has called for sustained funding to manage the vast responsibilities of the 2027 polls, including voter registration and security deployment. Additionally, INEC is seeking to intensify efforts against organized vote buying by collaborating with security and justice agencies to track and prosecute offenders.
