Nigeria's Kaduna and Kano States Expand Maternal and Newborn Health Programs
The Kaduna Ministry of Health opened a Medical Simulation and Debrief Training Course for senior clinicians, describing it as a strategic effort to strengthen competence, confidence and teamwork in managing maternal and neonatal emergencies. The program, organized with the Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain, the Nigerian Nurses Charitable Association UK, the Federal Ministry of Health and other partners, aims to scale simulation‑based learning across health facilities in the state.
In Kano, the State Commissioner for Health announced a renewed push to eradicate mother‑to‑child transmission of HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis. The state is implementing Nigeria’s triple‑elimination strategy, offering early antenatal testing, treatment with tenofovir for hepatitis B, therapy for syphilis and a birth‑dose hepatitis B vaccine to protect newborns. Both initiatives underscore intensified efforts to improve maternal and newborn survival in Nigeria.
