President Tinubu Vows Tech-driven Modernisation at Nigerian Army Day 2026
The 163rd Nigerian Army Day celebration was held on 6 July 2026 at the General Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, marking the event’s grand finale. President Bola Tinubu, speaking through Vice‑President Kashim Shettima, reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to upgrade the army, boost local defence production through the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), and adopt emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cyber‑security, and climate‑related security tools. He highlighted the African Land Forces Forum as a platform for regional defence cooperation, intelligence sharing and joint counter‑terrorism efforts, and noted the potential for job creation and increased local content in the defence sector.
Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara described the hosting of the event as evidence of peace and normalcy in the state, pledged continued state support to security agencies, and urged the federal government to improve the welfare and motivation of military personnel. Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu reported that over 80 % of Nigerian troops are engaged in operations against insurgency and affirmed the army’s dedication to protecting the nation’s territorial integrity. The celebration also featured military drills, displays by female commanders, and participation from defence delegates of 16 African countries.
