Nigeria's national grid restored after major power generation drop
Nigeria’s national grid has returned to normal operation following a significant drop in electricity generation on Monday. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reported that power generation fell sharply from 3,840 megawatts (MW) at 7:00 am to approximately 476.70 MW by 1:00 pm, a decline of 3,363.30 MW.
The sudden drop, which began around 12:40 pm, left several major power plants, including Egbin, Jebba, Shiroro, and Kainji, with zero output. Distribution companies like Ikeja Electric reported reduced supply hours due to the shortfall in power allocated from the national grid.
NISO clarified that the incident involved trippings on the 330kV transmission network rather than a total system collapse. Working alongside the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), NISO implemented corrective measures to stabilize the system and successfully restored normal operations. The operator urged the public to disregard unverified reports of a complete grid collapse.
