Nigeria electricity generation and grid stability

Overview

In late September 2026, Nigeria’s electricity generation showed signs of improvement, reaching 5,403.3 megawatts. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe noted that levels had recently exceeded 5,000 megawatts, an increase from the 3,700 to 4,700 megawatt range seen earlier in the year.

However, by mid-October, the national grid experienced a significant disruption. Power generation dropped sharply from 3,840 megawatts to approximately 476.70 megawatts within a few hours, leaving several major power plants with zero output. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) clarified that the issue was caused by trippings on the 330kV transmission network rather than a total system collapse. Normal operations were subsequently restored after corrective measures were implemented.
