Nigeria's NDC faces defections and calls to keep party on ballot ahead of 2027 election

Human rights activist Dickson Iroegbu warned that any attempt to sideline the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) would lead to “revolution and anarchy,” citing a recent Federal High Court decision that reversed an order to register the party for the 2027 elections. Iroegbu said the ruling party APC and President Bola Tinubu would be challenged if the NDC were excluded.

In a parallel development, around 4,000 NDC members in Ebonyi State—including Deputy Chairman Okechukwu Idenyi and Secretary Solomon Adum—defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The defectors were received by PDP State Chairman Chukwuma Igwe, who called the move a “major boost” for the party ahead of the 2027 polls. The former NDC officials cited confidence in the PDP’s vision for democratic governance and pledged to work toward peace and inclusive politics.

Both events highlight mounting pressure on the NDC as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, with internal dissent and cross‑party defections potentially reshaping the electoral landscape.
