Nigeria party dynamics ahead of 2027 election

Overview

In early July 2026 the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was blocked from registration for the 2027 elections, prompting warnings of possible unrest. On 4 July, human‑rights activist Dickson Iroegbu warned that sidelining the NDC could trigger “revolution and anarchy” after a Federal High Court reversed the order to register the party. The same day about 4,000 NDC members in Ebonyi State – including Deputy Chairman Okechukwu Idenyi and Secretary Solomon Adum – defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a move welcomed by PDP State Chairman Chukwuma Igwe as a “major boost.”

On 21 July the PDP Board of Trustees, chaired by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, declared the party had moved beyond prolonged litigation, citing alignment with a Supreme Court judgment. Ohuabunwa warned that anyone claiming the BoT chair without authority would be treated as a criminal impersonator and called for reconciliation, stronger unity and preparation for the 2027 polls.

A week later, senior PDP figures reiterated a commitment to keep the party intact. A Supreme Court ruling that there is now “one PDP” sparked a brief clash in Oyo State, with a faction loyal to Minister Nyesom Wike seizing the Ibadan secretariat while another held the Molete headquarters. The leaders also met former President Goodluck Jonathan to discuss the upcoming presidential race.

On 7 August former Senate President Bukola Saraki addressed PDP leaders in Ilorin, urging preservation of party unity as all PDP candidates were uploaded to the INEC portal and recent defections were hailed as evidence of public demand for credible governance. In the same period a bipartisan coalition of House members launched the Save Democracy Group, urging the National Assembly to reconvene and warning that constitutional breaches, fiscal mismanagement, economic hardship and worsening security were causing “Nigeria’s democracy to nose‑dive.”
