Nigeria's NDLEA arrests two elderly men for supplying drugs to Abia school students

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has detained two elderly men in Umuahia, Abia State, for allegedly supplying illicit drugs to secondary‑school pupils. The suspects are 84‑year‑old Godfrey Orji and 75‑year‑old Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora. Orji was intercepted by school security at Saint Silas Secondary School and handed to police, while Obiora was arrested at his patent‑medicine shop on Club Road, where agents recovered 4.64 kg of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam. A 15‑year‑old student testified that Orji regularly provided him with drugs, which the student also sold to peers. Both men are to be prosecuted; the involved students have been placed in counselling and rehabilitation programmes.

The arrests are part of a wider NDLEA crackdown that week, which saw the seizure of a 9.5 kg consignment of the synthetic cannabinoid ADB‑Chminaca from a Lagos courier firm, 300 g of high‑potency cannabis “Loud” hidden in handbags, and multiple raids that recovered codeine, methamphetamine, and large quantities of cannabis and skunk across Lagos, Kogi, Oyo, Edo and other states. The agency said the operations are aimed at dismantling drug‑ trafficking networks targeting youths nationwide.
